About Tom

Detroit native Tom Sullivan enjoys a robust career as an orchestral cellist and chamber musician. Mr. Sullivan has served in the cello section of the Grand Rapids Symphony since the 2019-2020 season. He also makes regular appearances with the Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, and Lansing symphonies. Alongside his orchestral work, Mr. Sullivan is a founding member of "Six Mile Strings." Lauded as "the most fun string quartet in the world" by Interlochen Public Radio's Kate Botello, Six Mile Strings strives to make exciting and unique quartet repertoire accessible to a wide and diverse audience. Mr. Sullivan holds a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance from Wayne State University, where he studied with Marcy Chanteaux and a Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Richard Weiss. Tom is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys spending time camping, hunting, and fishing throughout the state of Michigan. While not participating in any of the above activities, he can be found relaxing at home with his wife, Sasha, and three cats- Biscuit, Bella, and Gandalf.
