OUR MISSIONThe Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck is dedicated to perpetuating chamber music – keeping it vibrant and alive. We present concerts in an atmosphere that encourages a sense of belonging and works to involve the audience as an active part of the experience. We provide an opportunity for musicians to share their enthusiasm for their instruments and music as they present the challenge of the new and the comfort of the familiar. OUR HISTORYThe Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck was conceived by a small group with a big vision. Charmed by the physical beauty of Saugatuck, Michigan, its many art galleries, shops and restaurants and its bustling summer activity they developed the concept of a summer festival devoted to classical music. The founders – the late Elaine Richey, a faculty member at North Carolina School of the Arts; Henning Christiansen, a renowned violin maker now based in Holland, Michigan; and Charles Parrott, a local businessman – launched the first season in 1988. The festival continues to delight audiences and to attract outstanding musicians. Our guest artists have performed in concert halls and festivals literally around the world. Yet each of them treasures the opportunity to be a part of this festival that offers “big time” music in a “small town” setting. While our artists are paid for their performances, all other aspects of the festival, from ticket sales and publicity right down to setting up chairs, are performed by volunteers. This allows the performances to be presented for a very reasonable ticket price and provides many volunteer opportunities for our loyal local patrons. All performances are held at the historic 125-seat Saugatuck Woman’s Club, which offers an elevated stage for excellent viewing and fine acoustics. The intimate setting is idea for the appreciation of chamber music. “Meet the Artists” receptions are held after each concert, and complimentary coffee is available during intermissions. The Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck adds a unique dimension to Saugatuck’s reputation as a center for the visual arts by providing “Art for your Ears” as well. We invite you to join us. |
