Paul Austin · horn
Horn player Paul Austin currently enjoys a multifaceted career as soloist, pedagogue, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Heralded by the Holzminden Zeitung for his “absolutely stunning way of playing the horn”, and The Grand Rapids Press for being “tender on the warm French Horn”, he has performed throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. After earning a doctorate in horn performance from Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory, Dr Austin was a Resident Artist at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. He was the recipient of a Gilmore Emerging Artist grant for study in London, England.
Paul Austin has served as horn faculty member at colleges in Michigan, Louisiana, and Ohio. In addition, Dr Austin is the author of A Modern Valve Horn Player’s Guide to the Natural Horn. He was named to the 2002 edition of International Who’s Who in Classical Music. In 1999, Paul Austin became Utility Horn of the Grand Rapids Symphony, and just completed his third season as GRS Acting Fourth Horn. He has performed at summer music festivals in Banff, Fontana, Saugatuck, and Southern Illinois. Recently Paul appeared as concerto soloist with the Holland Symphony and Chicago’s Ars Antigua.
Through recent recordings released by OgreOgress, Paul may be heard on the CD Moons and Ancestors (Robert Shechtman’s Ancestral Songs/1998 for horn and organ), and the Audio DVD Morton Feldman and Barbara Monk Feldman (Morton Feldman’s Two Instruments/1958 for horn and cello). This is Paul Austin’s eleventh season to perform at the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck.
