Paul Austin · Horn
Horn player Paul Austin currently enjoys a multifaceted career as chamber musician, soloist, orchestral player, and pedagogue.
Heralded by the Holzminden Zeitung for “an absolutely stunning way to play the horn,” Paul Austin has appeared in the US, Canada, and Europe with organist Gregory Crowell and bassoonist Wendy Rose, with whom he is presently recording music for horn, bassoon and piano (along with pianist Yu-Lien The) by composers from the Great Lakes region.
After earning a doctorate in horn performance from Cincinnati´s College-Conservatory of Music in 1994, Dr. Austin was Resident Artist at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. As a recipient of a Gilmore Emerging Artist grant, Austin studied natural horn in London, England.
A notable teacher, Paul Austin has served as horn faculty member at colleges in Michigan, Louisiana, and Ohio. He currently maintains a strong studio of horn students in his home in Grand Rapids. In addition, Paul actively promotes historical instruments and is the author of A Modern Valve Horn Player´s Guide to the Natural Horn.
In 1999, Paul Austin became a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony. This is his eighth season to appear at the Chamber Music Festival of Saugatuck.
